Untitled (Reflections on Family)
This project was made a few months after I had been given a box of family photographs that would be digitized and then offloaded to someone else. I decided then and there that I needed them for an art piece in some way, the result was a long journey to the simplistic yet purposeful statement that is Untitled (Reflections on Family). Through the collection of photographs, I was relearning family histories and uncovering unknown or forgotten moments. I wanted to make sure I remembered all of my raw reactions to the photographs I really resonated with. Seeing how fellow artists then were beginning to react more towards the notes as a way to guide them through the narrative presented by the photographs, I realized that seeing these with a personal view would bring out the concept I was truly looking for throughout the work.
The photographs are put up in a 10-foot by 5-foot installation accompanied by sticky notes and a singular piece of yarn. The photographs are arranged in a way that allows for viewers to continuously move throughout the piece and make connections throughout the work, whether that be through the images, writings, or other reasons.
This work was part of a group show that encompasses a graduating group of BA and BFA students from Southern Methodist University. Below are views of the work being installed and presented along with a few other works from the exhibition.
